Though they were married for over 50 years and though Dolly Parton is one of the most famous people on the planet, there are few photos of young Carl Dean, Parton’s husband who died on March 3, and even fewer recent pictures, because Dean remained a private person for his entire life.

“He does not want to be in the spotlight at all,” Parton told Entertainment Tonight in a 2020 interview. “It’s just not who he is. He’s like, a quiet, reserved person and he figured if he ever got out there in that, he’d never get a minute’s peace and he’s right about that.”

That doesn’t mean Parton never shared tidbits about their life together. She has occasionally posted throwback photos of herself and her husband from when they were still just two young kids in love, and she’s even explained how a one-time Carl Dean flirtation inspired “Jolene,” one of her most famous songs.

“Jolene” was loosely based on a bank teller that “got this terrible crush” on her husband, Parton told NPR in 2008. “And he just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention. It was kinda like a running joke between us—when I was saying, ‘Hell, you’re spending a lot of time at the bank. I don’t believe we’ve got that kind of money.’ So it’s really an innocent song all around, but sounds like a dreadful one.”

Based on the photos we do have of young Carl Dean and Dolly Parton, it’s easy to see why he was such a heart-breaker back in the day.
