Babygirl star Nicole Kidman is back on our screens in Holland, this time as a picture-perfect housewife whose life is thrown into chaos. She will star opposite Succession‘s Matthew Macfadyen, who will play her “community pillar” husband. Anyone else reminded of Harry Styles and Florence Pugh in Don’t Worry Darling?
Holland will be helmed by Mimi Cave, known for directing Fresh, an offbeat take on the horrors of modern dating starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan. The director has also spoken out about working with Kidman, and specifically how hilarious she is.
“She plays this incredibly undertone comedic lead and I knew she had that in her, but maybe just hasn’t, you know, been in a role [like that] in a while,” Mimi told People. “She is so funny, so deeply funny. Her comedic timing is incredible.
Nicole’s work on Holland is also yet another example of her championing female directors. She has worked with 19 female directors in the last eight years, after promising to collaborate with one every 18 months back in 2017. She spoke out in an interview with Time about the “double standard for women behind the lens” and the fact that this “can only be changed by actually being in the films of women.”
Mimi added that Nicole makes herself “completely available to you as a director” on set. “She’s really incredible to watch and she’s someone I’ve learned a great deal from. It was a pretty magnificent experience for me,” she said.
