Last September, Donald Trump launched a wide range of watches, including everything from $100,000 tourbillons to relatively affordable diver-style pieces. The watches carried all the hallmarks of the current president’s style—they’re gaudy, over-the-top, and gold, and many of them come covered in diamonds. And, as of this week, at least one of the timepieces shares another quality with many of Trump’s products: it’s defective.
Tim Petit, a Rhode Island man, bought a $640 “Inauguration First Lady” watch. The timepiece is a gold-tone, pink-dialed, limited-edition, Trump-themed dive watch that Petit got as a gift for his wife, only for it to show up missing the “T” in “TRUMP,” NBC 10 News reported. A single missing letter wouldn’t be so funny if this didn’t result in the dial reading “RUMP.”
“I thought it was really nice,” Petit said about why he was initially driven to buy the watch. “It was beautiful, and I knew it would be something that she’d like.” However, Petit couldn’t excuse what arrived. ”I’m very disappointed,” he told the news station. “I want it to be a special thing for her. And we had expected that it would have the integrity of the president of the United States and good follow-through.” Petit relayed that his wife cried when she saw the mistake on her new watch.
The watches, produced by the same company that made the now-infamous $100,000 “Victory Tourbillon,” are Chinese-made products that use “the ‘Trump’ name, image, and likeness under a paid license agreement which may be terminated or revoked according to its terms,” according to the website selling the watches. The latest in a long line of gold-toned “luxury” goods hawked by the president, the Inauguration First Lady is “a women’s timepiece that embodies elegance and exclusivity. Crafted with a pink face, and beautiful golden fireworks printed on the dial, this watch goes beyond fashion!” Sure.
The specs are pretty standard for a dive-style watch at this price point: steel case and bracelet (here with two-tone accents); unidirectional dive bezel with an aluminum insert; automatic Seiko movement with date function. In fact, the sapphire crystal is actually an impressive touch at $599.
Thankfully, GetTrumpWatches.com is looking out for the little guys like Petit. When the company heard about the mistake, it reached out to apologize, replace the watch, and provide an $800 coupon to get another piece from the site. Hopefully the Petits hold onto the defective timepiece, though. In the annals of horological history, watches with typos on them have seen their value skyrocket. But something tells us that RUMP watches aren’t going to catch fire anytime soon.
