There are trends that, at least at first glance, make us roll our eyes. Then there are crochet ballet flats. These shoes provoke a response that’s very similar to Joey’s reaction to Rachel’s unusual English trifle recipe in that iconic Thanksgiving episode of Friends (season six, episode nine). We love ballet flats and we love crochet, so why wouldn’t we like crochet ballet flats?
We’re currently in a summer of extremes, marked by the sobriety of mocha sandal sandals and, on the other side of the spectrum, two relatively new types of footwear: sneakerinas and sporty Mary Janes. Now, crochet ballerinas arrive as the umpteenth hybrid shoe concepts to occur this season. Incredible, but true.
Designed to adapt to all kinds of environments—from summer fridays at the office with more relaxed dress codes to strolls along the seafront while eating an ice cream and enjoying the breeze—these ballet flats inspired by crochet dresses come in many shapes and colors but share a clear pattern: a rounded toe and often a closure designed to tie at the ankle, very similar to classic espadrilles.
Inevitably, the trend can be divided into two types: those in intense color ways (often with exciting designs and color combinations) and those in simple cream or off-white, which are more open to incorporating special elements, such as embroidery, a more groundbreaking shape or elements typical of other types of footwear, such as espadrille soles. Here are some more of our favorite macramé and crochet ballet flats (and some other styles for good measure):
