It didn’t end with Blake Lively. Verity is the next Colleen Hoover novel getting the big-screen treatment, this time with Anne Hathaway in the leading role.
Like many of Hoover’s books, Verity was a veritable (pun intended) BookTok sensation, for better and for worse. It was self-published in 2018 and has since sold over 2 million copies. Following the box-office success of It Ends With Us (cast drama aside), Hoover’s Verity will boast an even more star-studded cast and is sure to generate hype.
Here’s everything we know about the project, from the plot to it’s release date.
Who has been cast in Verity?
Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett, and Anne Hathaway are set to play Lowen and the Crawfords, respectively, with Ismael Cruz Cordova, Irina Dvorovenko, Lou Martini Jr., Michael Abbott Jr., K.K. Moggie, and Brady Wagner also taking roles, per IMDb.
What about the creative team?
Michael Showalter is directing. Through primarily known for comedy, Showalter recently directed Hathaway in The Idea of You, another film based on a popular novel. Variety reports that the shooting script was penned by Nick Antosca after previous versions by Hoover and Lauren Levine; Hillary Seitz; Angela LaManna; and Will Honley and April Maguire.
When does it come out?
Though it was previously set for a May 2026 release, Deadline now reports that Verity will now hit theaters on October 2, 2026.
What is the plot of Verity?
Warning: Spoilers ahead, though all of this information is pretty much revealed in the movie trailer (more on that later).
It’s Jane Eyre by way of true crime. Struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson) is offered the opportunity of a lifetime when Jeremy Crawford (Josh Hartnett), the husband of paralyzed novelist Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway), invites her to finish Verity’s series of novels.
While living in the Crawford home, Lowen (Dakota Johnson) can’t deny the growing attraction between her and Jeremy as she begins to suspect that Verity, confined to a bed in the home, may not be as paralyzed as she seems. She also begins to believe something very sinister about Verity which we won’t reveal here.
Is there a trailer?
One definitely exists, though you can’t watch it at the moment. Amazon MGM debuted the first trailer at CinemaCon back in April. According to Variety, the trailer kicks off with Verity and Jeremy’s first meeting at a bar. “You’ve had three drinks in 45 minutes,” he tells Hathaway’s Verity. “If you keep going, I’ll feel uncomfortable asking you to leave with me.”
