We love some serious shoes around here. Loafers, boots, derby’s, technical sneakers, you name it. Our appetite is insatiable. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have a giant soft spot for a great pair of slides. And why shouldn’t we? Unlike less-forgiving categories, slides tend to prioritize comfort and ease of wear among all else. In this way, you could say they’re under-appreciated for all they do.
And the slide category isn’t limited to the post-workout variety—though those are great and we won’t hear otherwise—which means that we didn’t stop there, either. We tested them all: leather ones, suede ones, fancy ones, spartan ones, classic ones, ones made for the trail and even, yes, molded rubber ones, among the rest. And believe us when we say there really is a slide for everyone.
Because this (incredibly comfortable, very supportive) landscape is so vast, we shuffled around the market for the very best so you can step into the warm season with your hottest fits.
The Best Men’s Slide Sandals, According to GQ
In This Guide
Best Slides Overall: Birkenstock Kyoto Slide
Birkenstock knows comfortable footwear like Planters knows nuts, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that they make the best version of a style predicated almost entirely upon comfort. But delivering upon sky-high expectations is a feat in and of itself, and the Kyoto delivers in full. What’s essentially an updated and reinforced version of their classic Zurich model, the Kyoto has a folding two-piece suede upper that’s battened down with a leather strap, the classic suede-lined cork footbed and a rubber outsole. Run ‘em with or without socks, with shorts or pants, as your bodega steppers or something a little more formal, they can handle pretty much anything.
Best Budget Slides: Adidas Adilette Slides
We’re not going out on any precarious limbs here, but sometimes you just don’t have to because one the most iconic, historically significant slides in the entire slide canon are also an impossibly good deal, clocking in under $30. The rubber isn’t exactly cushy, like that found on recovery slides, but the contours make for a super comfortable ride that cups the foot just right—with or without socks. So whether you’re looking for a pair of neighborhood stompers, locker room shoes or just some carefree sandals, the slides that spawned a legion of imitators will fit the bill.
Best Recovery Slides: Oofos Ooahh Slide Sandals
Some shoes take some time to break in, some are comfortable out of the box and then others, like the OOfos OOaah Slides, are so insanely comfortable that they actually aid in the recovery process. How? Science, it seems like? I don’t know, I’m not a scientist. But I do know that they’re made out of OOfoam™, which absorbs 37% more shock than garden-variety EVA, and the camber of the sole and footbed create something of a rocking action, which also lightens the load on your feet. Or, more simply, they’re lighter, softer and more ergonomic than any other slide we found, and they make your feet feel great.
Best Designer Slides: Bottega Veneta Intrecciato Leather Sandals
We’ll level with you: designer slides have the potential to be a pretty cynical concept. Especially when they’re a single-strap, logo-canvas made out of rubber, with an eye-watering price tag to match. But, we’re talking about a pair from Bottega that uses the intrecciato technique—which uses interlocking strips of leather to make the already-supple upper more flexible and long-lasting—to stratospheric effect. The leather outsole also breaks in like your comfiest pair of loafers, and once again, the strap is both a signature and a load-bearing design feature. Is it prudent to be spending $1,250 on a pair of slides? That’s entirely up to you. But if you want a pair that hovers above the rest like an alien spaceship, this is the pair.
Best Slides for the Outdoors: Teva Hurricane Verge Slides
Adventure slides exist? Better believe it. And Teva’s are, unsurprisingly, our favorite of the bunch. Equipped with an adjustable strap system and a quick-drying upper to lock your foot in during more strenuous activity, these also have an off-road approved outsole with a shank running through it for stability purposes. Are there better shoes for the tough stuff? Of course, an entire category is built upon the pursuit. But if you’re looking for one that’s easy to get in and out of, impossibly lightweight and completely unafraid of water, these are world-class. Will they cruise a Class 3 scramble? We wouldn’t advise trying, but if you’re on a trail, they’re plenty of shoe.
