You’ve gotta level up your denim game this year. Yes, jeans and denim jackets are timeless staples, but there are still ways you can (and should!) make them more interesting and stylish. For 2025, there are four major trends to know and hop on.
You don’t have to rewire your entire wardrobe to play into these trends; just buy one or two new pairs of pants. The beauty of denim is that it’s so damn versatile—trust me, your favorite gray sweatshirt will look just as good, if not better, with a cool pair of embellished jeans or flare jeans from the list below as it will with the beat-up jeans you’ve been avoiding washing for months.
Get on board and up your fit game. The best denim trends of the year are below.
Denim for Doing Stuff
The workwear origins of blue jeans are no secret. But this year it’s time to take things a little more literally. Double-knee reinforcements, extra pockets for holding all your stuff, and even loops for tools are all part of the equation. Esquire’s senior market and style editor, Alfonso Fernández Navas, eyed the trend this year at Paris Fashion Week, calling out collections from Junya Watanabe and Louis Vuitton for directly referencing denim’s hardworking roots. “As the proverb goes, ‘When the going gets tough, the tough get going,'” he says. “Jeans are begging to get back to work.”
Double Denim
The Canadian tuxedo has gone international. Denim on denim is the move this year, and it makes for an easy, effortlessly cool put-together look. The key here is to make sure your jeans are the same wash as your denim shirt or denim jacket; it looks more cohesive that way. But so long as your washes are the same, feel free to play around with it. Go for a super-dark wash, an all-black denim look, a super-light cowboy-inspired look, or even something fun like patchwork or printed denim.
If you need some more urging, take it from our commerce editor, Luke Guillory, whose fit rotation frequently features a double-denim look: “Double denim needs to be a bit ‘I just threw this on,'” he says. “Think Martin Sheen in Badlands, Kendrick Lamar, Ralph Lauren, or Serge Gainsbourg; it’s the laissez-faire attitude that makes it cool. That’s more important than details like fit or proportion. An easy way to get there is to just wear it like a uniform for a few days at a time. Pick a shirt or jacket and jeans you like and wear them together for a few days without putting them through the laundry (a crucial step). On day two or three—four-plus days means you’re really nasty—you’ll step outside and feel a bit crusty, but you realize no one cares. That’s when you’re wearing double denim properly.”
A Flair for Flares
The revival of western wear for 2025 has slowly crept in on us, but Kendrick Lamar’s flare jeans at the Super Bowl this year were the final nail in the coffin. It’s all about the bootcut, from runways to rodeos. If you’re feeling a little bit trepidatious about the return of the flare, don’t be; just grab yourself a fun pair of cowboy boots, try on the western-wear-inspired silhouette, and see how easily it suits you.
Embellished Denim
Timothée Chalamet’s jeans above are embracing two of the biggest denim trends of the year: a flare silhouette and some funky embellishment. The days of getting experimental and fun with your jeans are upon us. Try out some jeans with studded seams, or patchwork patterns, or intricate detailing on the back pockets, or, if you’re looking for something to dive headfirst into the trend with, all-over embellishment.
