The Air Jordan 40, Michael Jordan’s 40th signature sneaker, is officially here. It goes without saying that this is a big moment for Jordan Brand as it celebrates four decades of MJ’s line, but how can the brand honor the legacy while introducing a sneaker built for today’s game?

The brand says that the Air Jordan 40 has pulled various key details from past Air Jordans and implemented them onto the new performance silhouette, while bringing in some of the best technology Nike and Jordan Brand have to offer. The brand also revealed it worked with its top athletes to gather insights on what they want in a sneaker to perform at their highest level.

Ahead of the Air Jordan 40’s launch in mid-July, here’s a rundown of everything you need to know about MJ’s new signature model.

The Air Jordan 40 is the first sneaker in the brand’s history to pair Jordan’s Zoom Strobel unit with Nike’s ZoomX cushioning in the midsole for maximum responsiveness. The Air Jordan 39 also utilized ZoomX foam but combined it with a bottom-loaded Zoom unit. Zoom Strobel tech moves the cushioning closer to the foot for more responsiveness.

Scattered throughout the Air Jordan 40 is a new “40” logo, which represents the current silhouette in the Air Jordan franchise. It appears underneath the “Nike Air” logo on the heel, on the insole, and on the outsole’s traction pattern and incorporates 40-degree angles as a geometric Easter egg.

The Air Jordan 40 will launch in a simple white and black colorway dubbed “The Classic” on July 12 for $205. Then, the sneaker will be released in “Blue Suede” on August 20 and “Dusty Rose” on September 20.

Joining “The Classic,” “Blue Suede,” and “Dusty Rose” colorways, Jordan Brand confirmed that six more iterations of the Air Jordan 40 will launch in the next 12 months. Each of the unseen styles will feature unique materials on the upper that correspond with the names of the colorways.

Jordan Brand athletes Paolo Banchero and Trae Young have been announced as the faces of the Air Jordan 40 and will be wearing PE colorways of the sneaker throughout the 2025 NBA season.

A number of key elements from past Air Jordans are present on the Air Jordan 40, starting with the Air Jordan 3’s “Nike Air”-branded heel, as well as the Jordan 5’s reflective tongue. Additional reflectivity on the silhouette was pulled from the Air Jordan 13, while the bone line on the lateral side is inspired by the Air Jordan 14. Lastly, the medial vents were inspired by the Air Jordan 18, and the Jordan logo on the toe of the outsole was pulled from the Air Jordan 12.

Jordan Brand confirms that the lateral side of the Air Jordan 40’s collar will be shorter than the medial portion of the shoe, a detail that’s been a hallmark for Jordan designs that started with the Air Jordan 5.

Hidden within the upper of the Air Jordan are six webbing straps, which not only hold the wearer’s foot in place but also pay homage to Michael Jordan’s six NBA titles.

The Air Jordan 40 features a new herringbone traction pattern design that’s modeled after the aforementioned “40” logo, which is a nod to the 40th model in MJ’s signature line.
