G-SHOCK has just announced a brand new collaborative watch and apparel range with California-based surf lifestyle and ocean preservation brand Western Hydrodynamic Research.
Drawing inspiration from WHR founder Pat Towersey’s love of product design and the ocean, the new GLX-5600WHR-2ER watch incorporates tools for surf and marine sports (such as tide and moon graphs), shock-resistant structure, and 20-bar water resistance. It also includes a high-brightness LED backlight dubbed the ‘Super Illuminator’, a custom WHR decal on the watch face, and an engraved back plate with the WHR logo.
Just as integral to the ‘90s surfer culture that inspires Towersey is ecological mindfulness. In a bid to limit the watch’s environmental footprint, the bezel and band are made with bio-based resins produced using renewable organic plant resources.
Running a line of apparel alongside a new timepiece is a first for G-Shock, but a logical one. Tying in with the surf theme, the extremely limited-edition collection includes a cap (£49), two graphic t-shirts (£65) and two graphic hoodies (£125). Besides being limited in number, the apparel range is also UK-only.
“I am really proud to launch this special WHR surf watch and apparel collection with G-SHOCK,” says WHR founder Pat Towersey. “Every day, I look down at a G-SHOCK on my wrist, and now it’ll be a WHR we’ve developed together. Like us, G-SHOCK is a brand with deep roots in ocean lifestyle, and it’s exciting to extend this shared passion to our collective audiences.”
Jennifer Kelly, Head of DTC & Marketing of G-SHOCK added: “Together, G-SHOCK and WHR have created a special timepiece that is an essential surf tool. Whether you’re a beginner or advanced, our ‘never give up’ mantra is a guide to hold as they continue their journey with this G-SHOCK on their wrist.”
Refreshingly, it’s not going to break the bank. The watch itself—the GLX-5600WHR-2ER—will set you back £129 while the apparel sits between the £49 and £125 range.
