And just like that, Women’s March Madness 2025 is about to come to an end—and everything has led to another NCAA championship face-off between the UConn Huskies and the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Not going to lie, we’re still reeling from both team’s decisive Final Four victories on April 4. While UConn delivered a blistering defeat over UCLA (85—51), the Gamecocks soared into their championship spot by shutting down the Texas Longhorns (74—57). Now, just two days later, the top two women’s college basketball teams are set to face off at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.
This is bound to be a history-making game, with UConn’s star player Paige Bueckers embarking on the final game of her college career as the South Carolina Gamecocks go for their second championship title in a row, which would also mark their third win in four seasons.
“Sometimes we create these narratives about great players–[Caitlin Clark] was one of them; Paige is one of them right now—and we tend to forget the narrative about what our kids have been able to do, going for their third in four years,” University of South Carolina coach Dawn Staley said when asked about Bueckers’ legacy during a press conference on April 5.
She continued, “I want the sentiments to be about our players and what our players have been able to do—equally, because there’s room to do both. We can raise Paige up because she deserves that and raise our players up because they deserve that.”
