Colorful, patterned knit polos may get all the attention, but to me, they’re a nightmare: Clingy in all the wrong places, and then maddeningly floppy in others. And of course, my main complaint still stands: A hot-weather garment in a cold-weather fabric? Make it make sense!
Compare that genuine mess with the hardy, cooling, heritage magic that comes from the textured, waffle-like nature of the pique weave. Which, as I’ve just noticed, is being majorly discounted this Prime Day, even by the makers of the very best pique polos in the game—Lacoste, Nautica, Tommy Hilfiger, Brooks Brothers. Special mention for Lacoste here: The brand invented the polo shirt in 1933, debuting the style in, you guessed it, pique.
The Best Prime Day Pique Polo Deals
You know the fabric: It’s the one you think of when you think of a polo shirt, the one that feels crisp and substantial on day one, and then somehow crisp, substantial, and soft on day 11,723. Simply put, pique polos are flattering without asking to be looked at, wick sweat away like no other fabric, and welcome being put through pretty much any kind of wash cycle. You just cannot say the same for knit.
But honestly, I’m giving the knit polo side of this argument too much time here. Because a pique polo isn’t just better than a knit polo in the summer months—it’s also better than a T-shirt (pique polos are more breathable, yet more respectable), a button-up shirt (be gone, sleeves!), and a tank top (please, we have some standards.)
Thankfully, I’m far from the only dog in this fight. All of the best menswear brands, if and when they produce polos, are now doing so in classic pique—the result of a few look du jours firmly taking root, chief among them the explosion of tennis style, the re-emergence of the quiet, “old money” aesthetic, and the latest trend: Looking like you just walked off a Hollister shoot.
But the fact that pique is on trend is besides the point. There’s an eternal case to be made for the pique polo—one I made on a random weekday last September—but an even bigger case to be made for it this Prime Day, where almost every single one of the BPBs (Big Polo Bois) have seen their pique polo prices slashed.
