I was a beauty editor at a magazine in 2011 when Supergoop first danced its way onto retailers’ sparkling shelves. To set the scene: Skin care was not cool (SPF, in particular), Instagram had not yet overhauled how we buy skin care with tap and buy, and new SPF brands felt like a novelty. So I eagerly sat down with the brand’s founder, Holly Thaggard, to hear about how she planned to turn her suncare line from a tropical afterthought into something we’d want to use every day.
The secret to her success was making SPF feel more like skin care than gloopy suncare. And? She nailed it. My Take: If you’re looking for a no-nonsense face SPF that easily applies to skin and won’t cause any white cast or cake to beard hair, don’t sleep on this formula. Sometimes a formula stands out because it gives you just the right sheen or glow, but this one stands out because it literally goes on unnoticeably. Because it’s so light, it easily layers underneath other skin care products or foundation (if you wear that), and it doesn’t give any sort of greasy aftereffect so you can wear it all day. There might not be a whole lot of bells and whistles to this formula, but when it comes to SPF, I think we can all agree that’s not such a bad thing so long as your skin feels protected every single day.
